Autologous Donation

Indication:
 Predeposit autologous donation is indicated in elective surgical procedures with reasonable probability for transfusion and which there is sufficient time to obtain one or more units of blood with minimum risk and without creating significant hemoglobin deficit in patient - donor.


Contraindications:
1.    Bacteremia and acute localized infection
2.     Myocardial infarction in the past 6 months
3.    Unstable angina
4.    Aortic stenosis
5.    Congestive heart failure
6.    Significant ventricular arrhythmias
7.    Marked uncontrolled hypertension
8.    Cerebrovascular accident with in 6 months


Eligibility:

Patient-donor for autologous donation need not meet all the criteria of homologous blood donation. Suitable guidelines for the individual patient-donor should be established in consultation with patient-donor physician / surgeon and must be recorded.

Haemoglobin :  Acceptable at 11 gm.

Age :  There is no upper or lower limit of age. Pediatric patient undergoing elective Surgery can benefit from autologous blood.
 Weight & volume of blood: Donors weighing 60 kg or more can donate 450 ml of blood and donors weighing less than 60 kg may donate proportionately smaller volume of blood but no more than 8-9 ml/kg body weight. In pediatric patient of 8 years of age the weight should be 27 kg and no more than 10% of the patient's blood volume should be drawn at each phlebotomy.
Frequency of donation :  Donations are scheduled weekly or even at 4 days interval with the last phlebotomy performed 72 hours or more before the operation.

 Laboratory testing :  Minimum laboratory testing is ABO & Rh. Other serological testing are controversial, if tested and found positive the physician must be informed.
